A DDoS ICMP Flood attack overwhelms a target server or network with Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets, commonly known as 'ping' requests. Attackers leverage a botnet (a network of compromised computers) to send a massive volume of ICMP Echo Request packets to the target. The target system, attempting to respond to each request with an ICMP Echo Reply, becomes overloaded, leading to service degradation or complete unavailability. The sheer volume of traffic consumes bandwidth and processing resources.
