SEM assumes a normal distribution of scores, which may not always be the case. It also doesn't indicate the *type* of error – it only quantifies the amount of error. Furthermore, SEM is sensitive to the reliability coefficient used in its calculation. Choosing an inappropriate reliability measure can lead to inaccurate SEM estimates.
